How to extract the audio from a video as an MP3

Save a song from a concert clip, a voice memo from a video call, or a whole soundtrack, without uploading the video anywhere.

Steps

  1. Open Tonecut and choose your video, or drop it onto the page.
  2. To keep all of the audio, drag the handles to the very start and end. To keep part of it, drag them to the part you want. You can also type times, like 1:05.5.
  3. Under Save as, choose MP3 audio. MP3 has no length limit.
  4. Pick a quality, tap Make MP3, then Save file.

Which quality to choose

  • 128 kbps: speech, podcasts and lectures. About 1 MB per minute.
  • 192 kbps: the best default for music and mixed sound. About 1.4 MB per minute.
  • 256 to 320 kbps: music you want to keep in the best quality. About 2 to 2.4 MB per minute.

A higher setting can’t add detail that the video’s sound didn’t have. Most phone videos record audio at roughly 128 to 256 kbps, so 192 kbps keeps nearly everything.

Which videos work

MP4 and MOV files from phones and cameras work in every modern browser. WebM works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Surround sound is mixed down to stereo automatically.

Is it private?

Yes. Tonecut does all the work inside your browser. Your video is never uploaded, so it’s safe for personal recordings.
